We recently visited Enkidu Wine in Kenwood, in the Sonoma Valley. Your first question, no doubt, is What's an Enkidu? Glad you asked. A character from the Epic of Gilgamesh, Enkidu, created by the gods, was the lover of land and protector of animals. More information on the Enkidu website. It's a good read, once you're done reading about our visit.
Beautiful Spring day: clear and upper 70s; great day to be wine tasting in Sonoma. We first met Phillip Staehle at the tasting of Kick Ranch Syrahs during the 2008 Wine Blogger’s Conference. His wines impressed us and, no surprise, the name stuck with me. So the next time up to Sonoma we visited. Turns out we dropped in just days after they opened their new tasting room in Kenwood.
The tasting room is no huge place, as you can see. But it's comfortable, and the people there, including Phillip on the Saturday we stopped by, know what they're talking about. The wines are still good, but now, instead of just tasting the Syrah like we did last year, we got to taste all of his wines. Not just the Syrahs -- Kick Ranch and Odyssey -- but also a Rhone blend, called "Humbaba" (great value for this one), some Petite Sirah, two different Pinot Noirs (liked the Tina Marie from the Russian River Valley), and a Rose of Syrah called "Shamhat".
This is a nice place to visit: good wine and knowledgeable people (you'll even get most of the Gilgamesh story from them if you keep on asking about the names of the wines).
